"Daniel sees numbers as shapes, colours and textures and can perform extraordinary maths in his head. He can also learn to speak a language fluently from scratch in a week. He has Savant Syndrome, an extremely rare form of Asperger's that gives him almost unimaginable mental powers, much like the Rain Man portrayed by Dustin Hoffman."
I remember seeing an episode of 60 Minutes that featured Daniel Tammet, and I remember hearing something he said that struck something in me. While I'm neither a mathematical genius, nor capable of learning Icelandic in a week, he spoke about his synaesthesia, and how numbers could be ugly, or fuzzy, and he can actually paint Pi, and this was something I had thought I was previously experiencing alone.

I don't generally see numbers in colour, but they definitely feel like specific colours if I think about it. (I've actually gotten into an argument about the colour of six - it is, obviously, cerulean blue.) And words, especially names, are fairly frequently in colour. (Amael is orangey-gold; ruecian is pale grey-blue.) I'd be interested to know how common synaesthesia is among colourlovers!

I would be curious as well. I know a few of us experience some of it. lizcrimson was talking about how she was discussing music colours.
I've argued before about numbers and colours, and about songs, too. It's so interesting to see how others see them.

Interesting... I see colors (not literally) when I hear a persons name. The names to me just feel like colors. Some words but not many. Most all names represent some color to me.

Do you find that the colour you "see" is representative of that person as well, famousexpert?

I don't have number/letter-colour associations, but combinations of and individual colours can cause taste and texture sensations for me. I don't think I became acutely aware of it, though, until I started spending time at CL...
